Georgian armed forces peace contingent has left for Afghanistan. The Company, composed in total of 173 military servants, was seen off on their way to Afghanistan by Ministry of Defence of Georgia Bacho Akhalaia. “Our soldiers are properly trained and instructed, giving us more confidence for the successful accomplishment of the mission. We are well aware that ISAF represents one of the top priorities of NATO. Therefore the maintenance of peace and security in Afghanistan remains our common challenge, leading to our active participation in the international peacekeeping mission. In the near future I plan to go to Afghanistan to visit our soldiers deployed there”-declared Minister. The 23rd Battalion of Land Forces` Second Infantry Brigade will get involved in the NATO-led International Security Assistance Forces and perform their duties integrated in the French peacekeeping contingent.
At the farewell ceremony, which was held at the Vaziani military base today, the Company was handed over with a fighting banner, as a symbol of contribution in the international mission. Father Davit also gave his blessing to the soldiers among which six were awarded with “Kakutsa Cholokashvili” medals. Military servants will be deployed in Afghanistan together with the chaplain, orthodox priest Father Joseph.
